Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about ProxMan and get the most out of your Proxmox VE management experience.
ProxMan is a powerful iOS and Android application that allows you to manage your Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE), Proxmox Backup Server (PBS), and Proxmox Datacenter Manager (PDM) infrastructure directly from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android device. Monitor resources, manage virtual machines, control containers, handle backups, oversee your entire datacenter fleet, access terminals, and use VNC consoles - all from your mobile device. Stay connected to your infrastructure 24/7 with real-time monitoring and push notifications (iOS only).
ProxMan supports Proxmox VE version 7.0 or later (8.x recommended), Proxmox Backup Server versions 2.x and 3.x, and Proxmox Datacenter Manager (added in v1.6.0). The app requires iOS 16.4+ or Android 8.0+ and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Android devices.
ProxMan offers premium features through in-app purchase on both iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play) including: VNC Console Access (full graphical console with custom mobile keyboard toolbar), Terminal Access for LXC containers and PDM (node terminal is free; native terminal on both iOS and Android), PDM Magic Link (jump from datacenter remotes to native PVE/PBS screens), Push Notifications (real-time alerts - currently iOS only), Advanced Backup Management, and Priority Support. Basic monitoring and management features are available for free.
ProxMan supports multiple authentication methods: Traditional authentication with username and password (@pam, @pve, @pbs realms), API tokens for PVE, PBS, and PDM, OpenID Connect (OAuth2-based SSO for PVE and PBS — now opens in system browser with passkey/WebAuthn support; not available for PDM), TOTP/Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), and Biometric App Lock (optional Face ID/Touch ID/fingerprint on cold launch). All credentials are encrypted with AES-256 and stored securely in iOS Keychain or Android Keystore.
To add a server: 1) Open ProxMan and tap "Add Server", 2) Choose Proxmox VE, Proxmox Backup Server, or Proxmox Datacenter Manager (PDM), 3) Enter server details (hostname/IP, port 8006 for PVE, 8007 for PBS, or 8443 for PDM), 4) Enter your username (without realm suffix like "root" not "root@pam"), 5) Select your realm (@pam, @pve, @pbs, or OpenID Connect realm for PVE/PBS), 6) Enter password, API token, or authenticate with OpenID Connect, 7) Enable HTTPS for secure connection, 8) Tap "Add Device" to save. Your server will appear on the main dashboard.
OpenID Connect (OIDC) is a modern OAuth2-based authentication that provides single sign-on (SSO) with enhanced security. As of v1.6.0, ProxMan opens OIDC login in a secure system browser (not an embedded WebView), enabling passkey/WebAuthn login. To use it: 1) Configure an OIDC realm on your Proxmox server (Datacenter → Permissions → Realms), 2) Set up your identity provider with redirect URIs including "proxman://auth/callback", 3) In ProxMan, add a PVE or PBS server and select your OIDC realm, 4) Tap "Authenticate with OpenID", 5) Log in at your identity provider, 6) Authorize access. OIDC is not supported for PDM servers. No passwords are stored in ProxMan with OIDC.
Yes! ProxMan supports managing multiple servers. You can add unlimited Proxmox VE, PBS, and PDM servers, drag to reorder them in edit mode (long-press a card), switch between them from the main dashboard, and view all servers in a unified interface. Each server maintains its own credentials and settings. Perfect for MSPs and organizations with distributed infrastructure.
ProxMan provides comprehensive VM/container management: Full lifecycle control (create, start, stop, reboot, migrate), resource management (modify CPU, RAM, disk allocations), snapshot management (create, restore, delete), hardware configuration (modify VM hardware settings), real-time monitoring (CPU, memory, disk I/O, network traffic), console access (VNC for VMs, terminal for containers - premium features), and backup operations (create and restore backups).
VNC Console (Premium): Access VM graphical console with custom mobile keyboard toolbar (Esc, Ctrl, Tab, arrows, paste), touch input, zoom/pan controls, and screen rotation. Terminal Access: Node terminal is free on both iOS and Android. LXC container terminal and PDM-proxied remote terminal require premium. Android terminal includes a native accessory bar (Esc/Ctrl/Tab/arrows) and keyboard height handling. Features include full shell access, command history, tab completion, external keyboard support, copy/paste, and customizable fonts.
Push notifications (Premium feature, currently iOS only) keep you informed about critical events: backup completions and failures, task status updates, and system alerts. To enable: 1) Go to Notifications in ProxMan, 2) Tap "Enable Push Notifications", 3) Allow when iOS prompts, 4) Configure notification preferences in iOS Settings. Notifications use end-to-end encryption and no sensitive data is included in notification content. You can manage notification settings on your Proxmox server (Datacenter → Notifications).
Yes! ProxMan includes full Proxmox Backup Server integration: datastore overview and management, backup job monitoring and task tracking, storage usage and capacity monitoring, backup verification status, garbage collection and cleanup tasks, task logs and history, and backup operations (verify, prune, restore). You can manage PVE, PBS, and PDM from a single app.
Security is a top priority. ProxMan implements: AES-256-CBC encryption for credentials and auth tokens at rest, optional biometric app lock on cold launch, SSL/TLS encrypted communications, credentials stored in iOS Keychain or Android Keystore, OpenID Connect with system browser and passkey support, encrypted iCloud-synced credentials (iOS), no third-party data transmission, TOTP/2FA support, and regular security updates. All data stays between your device and your Proxmox servers.
Yes, ProxMan works anywhere your device can reach your Proxmox servers. For remote access, ensure your Proxmox server is accessible (via VPN or secure port forwarding), use HTTPS for encrypted connections, configure firewall rules appropriately, and consider using OpenID Connect for enhanced security. Always follow security best practices when exposing servers to the internet.
Yes! ProxMan includes home screen widgets for iOS with PVE, PBS, and PDM support: Server Status Widget (quick view of server health), Resource Usage Widget (CPU, RAM, storage at a glance), PDM Widget (fleet health, remotes online/total, node counts), and VM Status Widget (see running VMs without opening the app). To add: long-press your home screen, tap "+", search for "ProxMan", choose widget size, and add to home screen. Android widgets coming soon.
Starting in v1.6.0, ProxMan supports Proxmox Datacenter Manager — connect once to your PDM instance (default port 8443) and manage your entire fleet. Features include a datacenter dashboard with fleet health and aggregated resources, fleet-wide guest browser with start/stop actions, per-remote drill-down for PVE clusters and PBS servers, 48-hour task log, PBS datastore detail, and PDM shell terminal (Premium). Magic Link (Premium) lets you tap a PDM remote and jump straight into that server's native PVE or PBS management screen without adding it twice. See our PDM documentation for setup details.
For connection issues: 1) Verify server IP/hostname and port (8006 for PVE, 8007 for PBS, 8443 for PDM), 2) Check network connectivity and firewall rules, 3) Ensure HTTPS is properly configured, 4) Verify credentials are correct (username without realm suffix), 5) Check user has appropriate permissions in Proxmox, 6) For OpenID Connect, verify realm configuration and redirect URIs.
